If you’re trying to budget, grocery shopping at stores like Walmart and ALDI they really are one of the easiest and best ways to keep your food costs down (which sounds pretty important right now, considering you have to sell a kidney or your first child to support yourself, not to mention a family with kids. I also included how much protein each food had, since protein is an area that people struggle with and historically can’t get into. A general protein goal for most people would be to get 0.8-1.0 grams of protein per pound of body weight.

3’s Rule of Focusless Grocery Shopping

My biggest nutrition tip is to keep food simple. I have been sharing about the “Rule of 3” for years and years now. A fool-proof, stress-free way to grocery shop and plan for the week. And I’m not exaggerating when I say it will change your life.

The rule of 3’s: buy 3 proteins, 3 carbs, 3 fats, 3 vegetables, 3 fruits. Build each meal by combining protein, carbs, fats, fruits, and vegetables. Then the next time you go shopping, vary what you buy in each category so you don’t burn out or get bored.

An example of the Rule of 3’s:

  • 3 Proteins: eggs, ground beef, chicken thighs
  • 3 Carbs: rice, sweet potato, oats
  • 3 Fats: olive oil, avocado, butter
  • 3 Fruits: blueberries, blackberries, bananas
  • 3 Vegetables: broccoli, bell pepper, asparagus
