Books I’ve Read & Loved in 2024
Inside: In case you’re looking for a new read (or a great gift for someone), here are the books I’ve loved this year.
This was a weird year for books because I started and stopped at least a dozen. It’s very dark. Very fluffy. It is very sad. It’s very scary. Lots of fairies and talking wolves. (Yes, I’ve found that fantasy romance is not my type.)
But I finished and loved all nine novels. Maybe you’ll enjoy them too.
A sandwich
by Catherine Newman
From Amazon: “This year’s vacation, with Rocky between his toddler kids and fully grown parents, promises to be just as fun as last summer—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s anger and depression. (Hello, menstruation!) Her body changes—her life changes. And then a series of events sends Rocky into the past, recalling both the tenderness and the heartbreak of a few summers ago.”
Conversations with Friends
by Sally Rooney
From Amazon: “Written with jewel-like precision and punctuated by sly humor, Conversations with friends wonderfully alive to the joys and dangers of youth, and the dirty edges of female friendship.”
Sorrow and Joy
by Meg Mason
From Amazon “There is something wrong with Marta. Ever since a small bomb went off in his brain, at the age of seventeen, that left him changed in a way that no doctor or medicine could fix then and no one, even now, can explain…Maybe there is a different story to be written, if Marta will know where to start.”
We All Want Impossible Things
by Catherine Newman
From Amazon: “Edith and Ashley have been best friends for over forty-two years. But now the unthinkable has happened. Edi dies of ovarian cancer and spends her last days in a hospice near Ash…For anyone who has ever lost a friend or loved one. Get ready to laugh your tears off.”
Demon Copperhead
by Barbara Kingsolver
From Amazon: “Live in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead it’s the story of a boy born to a single mother who turned twelve in a single-wide trailer, with no possessions except his late father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a brilliant mind, and a strong gift for survival.”
Ordinary People
by Sally Rooney
From Amazon: “Ordinary People it is a story of mutual interest, friendship, and love. It takes us from that first conversation to years later, between two people who try to stay apart but find they can’t.”
SATURDAY NIGHT AT LAKESIDE SUPPER CLUB
by Ryan Stradal
From Amazon: “In this fading world of pleasure trays and brandy old fashions, New York Times bestselling author J. Ryan Stradal has given us a story full of his signature winning, honest but flawless Midwestern characters as they battle love and tragedy, hardship and hope—and what their legacy will be when they’re gone.”
After Doing
Written by Taylor Jenkins Reid
From Amazon: “This is a love story about what happens when love ends. It’s about staying in love, taking love, letting go of love, and committing to love with all you have. And above all, After Doing the story of a couple stuck in an old game—and searching for a new road that can lead them to happily ever after.”
Notes On An Execution
by Danya Kukafka
From Amazon: “Combining dramatic suspense with dramatic empathy, Notes on Execution presents a provocative portrait of feminism as it simultaneously unravels the mainstream narrative of the American serial killer, interrogating our justice system and our cultural obsession with crime stories, asking readers to consider the false promise of seeking meaning in the minds of violent men. “
